What do you enjoy about working with the SI program and/or having a class with an SI Leader?
I love working with the incredibly talented SI Leaders assigned to my courses. I continue to be impressed with the innovative learning exercises they design that target difficult course topics and address common misconceptions. SI Leaders devote many hours each week planning and implementing learning tools.
What would you say to students who are trying to figure out whether or not to go to SI Sessions?
The Supplemental Instruction program allows more time for student interaction than is possible in large lecture sections. Participation in group exercises designed to target the more difficult course learning objectives helps students understand the course content-not simply attempt to memorize random key facts-which should lead to higher test scores. Many students may also feel more comfortable meeting with an SI Leader, one of their peers, rather than with their course instructor during office hours.
What would you say to a faculty member or department who is interested in having SI?
If you are afforded the opportunity to participate in the SI program, take it! The program allows for a larger number of students needing encouragement/learning resources/study strategies to be reached than instructor office hours alone can possibly accommodate.
