What do you enjoy about working with the SI program and/or having a class with an SI Leader?
I have worked with the SI program since its implementation in our department in the fall of 2015. All of the SI Leaders that have been assigned to my courses (2-3 per year) have been very intelligent, personable, respectful, and overall great students. As a result of having excellent SI Leaders, the students that utilize the SI program find the sessions to be very beneficial in helping them better understand the course material.
What would you say to students who are trying to figure out whether or not to go to SI Sessions?
I tell students to try and make the time to attend as many SI sessions as possible. Most students think that the SI sessions are for students who are doing poorly in a course, but that is not the case. Students who attend the sessions and are actively involved, typically do better on exams compared to students who don't attend.
What would you say to a faculty member or department who is interested in having SI?
The SI program is very beneficial to both the faculty member and your students. The program is designed in a very efficient way, such that it doesn't take up a lot of "extra" outside of class time for the faculty member and provides students with an additional (and excellent!) resource to better understand course material.
